Even the most beautiful men and women in the world have insecurities. In a study interviewing nearly 2,000 men and women in the United States, 49% of respondents believe that their under-chin area negatively impacts their appearance. If we scale this sample, we could suggest that nearly half of Americans are uncomfortable with the appearance of their submental fullness, endearingly known as a ‘double chin’ by most.

At Sixth Street Dental Aesthetics, we want to help you put your best face forward, which is why we’re a Kybella Pittsburgh provider—the FDA-approved solution to stubborn under-chin fat.

What is Kybella, you ask? Here we’ll go over:

  • What is Kybella?
  • The sources of submental fullness
  • Where you can get Kybella in Pittsburgh

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells on the chin responsible for submental fullness, more commonly known as a double chin. Kybella is made of a synthetic version of a naturally-occurring molecule in your body known as Deoxycholic Acid. Deoxycholic Acid that occurs naturally in the body breaks down fat into tiny droplets so it can be absorbed properly in the intestines. This led drug developers to investigate whether or not the same acid could be used for aesthetic fat-burning purposes. This curiosity is the ground from with Kybella was born.

Much like the fashion in which Botox is injected into the body, Kybella is a non-surgical fat treatment that destroys fat cells, inhibiting these cells from storing existing fat or accumulating additional fat. This in and of itself not only reduces existing submental fat but prevents submental fat from forming in the future. More than 1600 patients have been treated with Kybella worldwide in a series of clinical studies and 79% of these patients experienced improvement in the appearance of the submental region.

Where does Submental Fullness Originate?

The Three Main Sources of Your Double Chin

While a double chin is extremely common among many Americans, it is still a source of insecurity for people of all ages. Submental fat leads to a less structured and defined jaw shape, which leads many people to believe they are less attractive in pictures and at different angles. A common reason that people find submental fullness unattractive is that they assign this physical trait to a sign of being overweight or obese, which to our culture, is not always a favorable look.

However, the excess fat in your submental region isn’t always due to being overweight or a poor diet. While weight is one factor that leads to submental fullness, another large determinant for it is in your genes. Even though scientists have not identified the exact genetic coding that leads to submental fullness, they have found clear patterns in the genetic appearance of people in the same family who many times all exhibit a similar degree of it. This means that even with a strict diet and exercise, some people will never be able to naturally rid themselves of their double chins.

On top of weight and genetic sources, submental fat has a variety of environmental determinants. As we age, we naturally lose the collagen and elasticity in our skin that can lead to sagging and excess skin. Smoking, sun exposure, and even gravity can introduce or worsen the appearance of an existing double chin.

It’s important to note that submental fullness itself is not harmful. It is merely a location where fat cells tend to gather (even the healthiest, most fit people in the world have fat on their bodies!), your double chin is not a sign that you are unhealthy or not beautiful. However, if you find insecurity in your submental fullness, you do have options like Kybella. Pittsburgh dentist and aesthetic specialist Sixth Street Dental Aesthetics can help you sort through all your cosmetic options like Kybella to find the treatment that’s right for you.

All Kybella injections are delivered by a licensed medical professional. These professionals, like Sixth Street Dental Aesthetics, will first consult with you to decide if Kybella is right for you. If so, they will create a treatment tailored to the amount of fat under your chin and your aesthetic goals. During treatment, you’ll receive multiple small injections. The precise number of these injections varies from patient to patient. From start to finish, the treatment only takes about 15-20 minutes.

Most people require more than one treatment to fully reach their aesthetic goals. In the clinical trial, 59% of patients received a maximum of 6 treatments, each treatment no closer than 1 month apart from one another. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, and pain of the injection site. These treatments lead to great results for many patients, making it a great solution for treating submental fullness.

If you’re interested in Kybella or other aesthetic treatments like Botox or Juvederm, get in touch with Sixth Street Dental Aesthetics.
